Bye Bye Tivo
I finally caved and upgraded to an HD DVR from Time Warner Cable. I’ve had an HDTV for almost a year now, but I had still been using my old single tuner series 2 Tivo. I was long overdue for an upgrade, but I just couldn’t justify the cost of a new HD Tivo (~$300) plus the monthly service fee ($12.95).
The new Time Warner box is leased form the cable company for $8 a month and offers HD programming and dual tuner recording. However, the benefits stop there. It lacks the extremely polished user interface of the Tivo and seems very slow and clunky. Everything about the Tivo is so intuitive, and it is configurable beyond belief. I can’t understand why the cable companies are not copying the Tivo UI.
I’m sure I’ll get used to this cable box for now, but I anxiously long for the day when I have enough cash to drop on a new Tivo HD box.
